Welcome to a website about the extinct blue antelope

"Preciousness is often defined by rarity. By this criterion, hardly anything in natural history can be more valuable than a scrap of blaauwbock..." (Stephen Jay Gould)

Image © RMNH Naturalis / Kate Foster

How does a culture reflect the animals it eradicates?

Why look at obscure, old, specimens?

Little is known about a skull that probably was once part of a blue antelope in the Hunterian Collection in the University of Glasgow. Remains of this extinct species are incredibly rare, so this project aims to bring together different kinds of knowledge and ideas about this intriguing species. As well as summarising information, we ask questions and invite comments which may be added to this site.

This website was developed with support from the Leverhulme Trust; the Department of Geographical & Earth Sciences and Hunterian Zoology Museum (University of Glasgow); Naturalis (the Netherlands); the Museum of Natural History (Vienna, Austria); deFreeze.co.uk This website is designed to require minimal energy expenditure to look at it.
